Cruel Witness

Cruel Witness was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering Foundations Jumpstart set, which functions as an entry point for new and returning players. Designed to be accessible yet mechanically resonant, the card draws upon the game's long-standing tradition of horror-themed creature designs. It reflects the overarching design philosophy of Foundations, which aims to keep core staples in the game for extended periods, ensuring that cards like this one contribute to a stable and recognizable gameplay experience across multiple formats.

The artwork for this card continues the aesthetic established by the Wizards of the Coast creative team for the Foundations set. By blending traditional gothic imagery with modern digital illustration techniques, the designers aimed to evoke a sense of unease consistent with the card's name and role in a deck. Upon its release, it was noted by players as a functional piece of utility in the black-aligned color identity, balancing thematic immersion with clear, consistent mechanics suitable for both beginners and veterans.
