Where it came from
Currency Converter was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna Commander set, a collection themed around the art deco, mob-ruled metropolis of New Capenna. Within the game's mechanics, it serves as an artifact that rewards players for discarding cards, reflecting the set's focus on resource management and the underworld economy of the city. The item was designed to integrate into the 'corpse-churning' strategies prevalent in the expansion, emphasizing the theme of turning raw materials into capital.
The card's artwork, illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, captures the aesthetic of the plane with metallic filigree and an industrial, high-stakes atmosphere. Kieryluk, a longtime contributor to the game, employed a sharp, structured style to evoke the feeling of a sophisticated financial instrument. Upon its debut, the card was noted for its utility in graveyard-focused decks, quickly becoming a recognized tool for players looking to manipulate their hand and board state through calculated exchanges.
