Where it came from
Curse of Silence was released in 2021 as part of the Commander set associated with Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. The card was designed to function within the multiplayer Commander format, specifically utilizing the 'Curse' enchantment subtype, which attaches to a player to create a negative global effect. This design reflects the gothic horror theme of the Innistrad plane, focusing on themes of isolation, restriction, and communal dread.
The artwork was created by illustrator Matt Stewart, who has contributed to the Magic: The Gathering franchise for many years. Stewart employed a painterly, atmospheric style to capture the card's theme, focusing on the visual representation of a silenced voice. Upon release, the card was well-received by players looking for efficient, low-cost political tools to slow down opponents in group games, becoming a staple in white-aligned control decks.
