Where it came from
Curse of Silence was released in 2021 as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set marked a return to the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad, focusing on a desperate struggle for survival as the days grew shorter and monsters stalked the land. The card functions as a white enchantment that forces an opponent to pay additional mana to cast a specific card, representing the oppressive, stifling nature of silence within the game's mechanics.
The artwork for the card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who aimed to evoke the eerie, haunting aesthetic synonymous with the Innistrad setting. The design focuses on a surreal, unsettling visual of a tongue being replaced or bound, capturing the thematic essence of being rendered unable to speak. Upon release, the card was received as a niche but effective tool in Commander and other casual formats for its ability to disrupt opponents' strategies early in a game.
