Where it came from
Curse of Vitality was released in 2017 as part of the Commander 2017 expansion, a set specifically designed to support the multiplayer Commander format for Magic: The Gathering. As part of a cycle of 'Cursed' enchantments, it was intended to create political dynamics at the table by incentivizing multiple players to attack a designated opponent, rewarding them with life gain in return for their aggression.
The card features illustration by Johann Bodin, who utilized a gothic, foreboding aesthetic to convey the thematic weight of a magical hex. The design reflects the 'Vampiric Bloodlust' deck's mechanics, emphasizing the balance between life-resource management and group-hug or group-slug interaction, a hallmark of the strategic depth encouraged by Wizards of the Coast during this era of set development.
