Where it came from
Cut a Deal was introduced in the Final Fantasy Commander set, designed as part of a multi-player expansion tailored for the popular Commander format in Magic: The Gathering. The card was created to encourage table politics, reflecting the cooperative and chaotic social dynamics inherent in the game's multiplayer environments. It serves as a mechanical representation of the trade-heavy gameplay typical of Final Fantasy-themed decks, which often emphasize group-hug mechanics and shared resources.
The artwork for the card features a stylized depiction of familiar franchise motifs, aiming to capture the essence of high-stakes negotiations found throughout the series. The illustrators focused on clean, recognizable character aesthetics to bridge the gap between fantasy tabletop aesthetics and the visual identity of the Final Fantasy universe. Upon its release, players praised the design for its ability to speed up game progression while maintaining the thematic integrity of its source material.
