Where it came from
Damnation was released as a promotional card for the 2008 Magic Player Rewards program, serving as a significant reprint of the powerful board-wipe spell originally printed in the Planar Chaos set. The card was awarded to active players as a foil incentive for participating in organized tournament play, marking a shift in how Wizards of the Coast distributed highly sought-after competitive staples to the community.
The artwork was illustrated by Kev Walker, who maintained the grim, apocalyptic aesthetic established by the original printing. Walker's design emphasizes the raw destructive force of the spell, utilizing a stark, dark palette that became synonymous with the card's mechanical function. Upon its release, this version was received with significant enthusiasm by collectors and competitive players alike, who prized its unique foil treatment and frame.
