Where it came from
Dark Petition was originally released as part of the Magic Origins expansion in 2015, with this specific promo version featuring alternate art and a unique foil treatment provided to participants in Magic: The Gathering store events. The card draws upon the lore of the Multiverse, depicting the darker, more manipulative side of black mana magic, where a caster sacrifices resources to tutor for a specific solution from their deck.
The illustration for this promo variant was created by artist Daarken, known for his atmospheric and moody contributions to the game. He aimed to capture the visceral nature of a demonic pact, using shadow and high-contrast lighting to emphasize the weight of the cost required to finalize such a ritual, a design choice that resonated with players who favored the thematic depth of the game's darker color alignment.
