Where it came from
Darkpact was originally released in the 1994 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Ice Age, designed as a black-aligned spell that allowed a player to draw cards at the cost of life. The International Collectors' Edition (ICE) version, featuring the distinct gold-bordered back, was produced in 1993 as a non-tournament legal set intended for display and casual play, mirroring the aesthetic of the limited-run Beta release but designed specifically for the international market.
The card’s artwork, rendered by artist Quinton Hoover, exemplifies the moody, high-fantasy aesthetic prevalent in the game's formative years. Hoover’s illustration style was characterized by fluid, emotive linework and a strong grasp of narrative tone, making this specific card a notable example of the early visual identity that helped define the game's cult following during the mid-nineties.
