Provenance

Where it came from

Darkpact was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Alpha set, the very first printing of Magic: The Gathering. Created by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the game emerged from a desire to combine the depth of hobby games with the portability of traditional card games. Within the game’s mechanics, the card represented the grim, high-stakes nature of black mana, reflecting the dark fantasy themes that defined the early aesthetic of the set.

The card’s haunting artwork was illustrated by Dameon Willich, who contributed several pieces to the original Alpha release. His work for the set leaned into a gritty, visceral style that helped establish the game’s distinct visual identity. While not among the most powerful cards in competitive play, Darkpact remains a significant piece of Magic history as a representative of the foundational cards that launched the collectible card game genre.
