Dauthi Mindripper

Dauthi Mindripper was released in the 1997 Tempest expansion for Magic: The Gathering, a set notable for its introduction of the 'shadow' mechanic. This mechanic represented creatures existing in a parallel, ethereal plane, allowing them to bypass most conventional defenders. The design team, led by Mike Elliott, intended the Dauthi cards to feel elusive and dangerous, grounding the expansion in the dark, Rath-based aesthetic that defined the set's narrative.

The artwork was provided by Brian Snoddy, who utilized his signature gritty, ink-heavy style to capture the horror-fantasy aesthetic common in late 90s Wizards of the Coast products. The illustration focuses on the twisted, skeletal nature of the Dauthi race, effectively communicating their role as psychological tormentors. Upon release, the card became a staple of aggressive black-aligned decks, praised for the efficiency of its shadow ability combined with a hand-disruption effect.
