Provenance

Where it came from

Dauthi Jackal was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the final set in the Rath Cycle, Exodus introduced the shadow mechanic, which represented creatures dwelling in a dark, parallel dimension. The card depicts a member of the Dauthi, a race of shadow-aligned beings whose narrative focus centered on their lost civilization and their struggle for survival within the shifting landscape of the Rath plane.

The artwork was created by illustrator Randy Elliott, who utilized a distinct, moody aesthetic to emphasize the creature's otherworldly nature. The design focuses on the creature's predatory silhouette and spectral appearance, consistent with the thematic goals of the shadow mechanic, which limited interaction between creatures to only those sharing the ability. Upon release, the card became a staple of aggressive shadow-based decks, reflecting the tactical shift Wizards of the Coast was pursuing during the late 1990s.
