Where it came from
Death Ward was released in 1993 as part of the Unlimited Edition, the second print run of the Magic: The Gathering core set. Following the rapid sell-out of the limited Alpha and Beta printings, Wizards of the Coast produced Unlimited to meet the overwhelming demand for the burgeoning trading card game. Like its predecessors, it featured a clean, white-bordered design that distinguished it from the limited releases.
The card was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a foundational artist for the early game whose work defined much of Magic's initial aesthetic. Tasked with visualizing the concept of a spiritual shield against death, Hoover employed his signature ornate, flowing style to depict the protective ward. While the card is often cited by players for its specific mechanical utility in white-aligned defensive strategies, it remains a quintessential piece of the game's early visual history.
