Provenance

Where it came from

Death Ward is a white enchantment from the Summer Magic set, also colloquially known as the Edgar set. Printed in 1994, this set was an intended replacement for the Revised Edition, designed to correct the color balance and printing errors that had plagued earlier runs of the Magic: The Gathering card game. However, due to a significant volume of new errors, the vast majority of the print run was ordered to be destroyed by Wizards of the Coast, making the few cards that escaped into the market some of the rarest collectibles in the hobby.

The card features an illustration by Dan Frazier, a prominent early artist for the game whose style helped define the aesthetic of the first few years of Magic. The artwork portrays a mystical protective barrier consistent with the theme of the card, which allows players to prevent damage from black sources. While the card itself is mechanically identical to its Revised counterpart, the high-gloss card stock and distinct color saturation of the Edgar set provide a unique visual profile that separates it from standard printings of the era.
