Where it came from
Deathlace was first introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, later appearing in the Fourth Edition release in 1995. As part of the original cycle of 'lace' cards, it was designed to allow players to change the color of a target permanent to black, a mechanic intended to interact with specific color-hoser cards from the game's earliest iterations.
The artwork for the Fourth Edition printing was created by Sandra Everingham. Her illustration features a stylized, gothic lace motif that reflects the card's function of magically altering the properties of an object.
