Debt to the Kami

Debt to the Kami was released in early 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. The card was designed as a common-rarity black spell that utilizes the 'saga' and 'channel' thematic framework of the set, emphasizing the cost of disregarding the ancient spirits in a modernized world.

The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized the set's distinct fusion of Japanese folklore and neon-noir aesthetics. Voss sought to capture the solemnity of a ritualistic bargain, balancing dark, ink-wash textures with the glowing, vibrant accents characteristic of the neon-themed plane.
