Where it came from
Hidetsugu, Devouring Chaos is a legendary creature card released in the 2022 Magic: The Gathering set Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. This set marked a return to the plane of Kamigawa, reimagining its original feudal Japanese aesthetic through a futuristic, cyberpunk-inspired lens. The design represents an iteration of the ogre Hidetsugu, a prominent figure from the original Kamigawa block, now elevated to a chaotic, neon-infused entity reflecting the set's central duality of tradition and progress.
The artwork for this specific collector number was illustrated by the artist Dominik Mayer. Mayer's distinctive, high-contrast style employs sharp, angular lines and a vibrant, limited color palette that emphasizes the chaotic energy of the character. Upon its release, the card became a focal point for players interested in high-variance, strategic deck-building, with critics noting how its mechanical focus on mana value manipulation mirrored the unpredictable nature of the set's neon-drenched urban sprawl.
