Provenance

Where it came from

Deeproot Champion was released in 2017 as part of the Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on a world inspired by Mesoamerican cultures, the card represents the Merfolk faction of the plane, which is depicted as a deeply spiritual society attuned to the natural wonders and hidden mysteries of the jungle landscape.

The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized a vibrant, lush color palette to emphasize the creature's connection to the flora of Ixalan. Mechanically, the card was designed to support aggressive deck archetypes that rely on playing numerous noncreature spells, rewarding players who focus on proactive, synergy-driven gameplay rather than defensive board states.
