Where it came from
Deeproot Champion was released as a promotional card for the Ixalan set of Magic: The Gathering, which debuted in 2017. The set drew heavy inspiration from themes of exploration and Mesoamerican mythology, casting players into a world of jungle islands inhabited by factions like the Merfolk. This specific promo was distributed through organized play programs, serving as a reward for participants to encourage local community engagement during the expansion's release window.
The card features artwork by Johannes Voss, whose digital illustrations are known for their luminous lighting and ethereal quality. In this piece, Voss depicts the Merfolk druid amidst the dense, vibrant foliage of Ixalan, emphasizing the creature's connection to nature and the growth-centric mechanics of the card. The design was received well by players who appreciated how the art visually communicated the 'grow' mechanic, where the Champion gains power with every non-creature spell played.
