Where it came from
Deeproot Champion is a card from the Ixalan expansion of Magic: The Gathering, specifically featured as a promotional release. It was released in 2017 as part of a cycle of cards intended to showcase the tribal themes of the Ixalan plane, which centered on exploration and conflict between four factions: dinosaurs, merfolk, vampires, and pirates. The card represents the merfolk of the River Heralds, a group dedicated to protecting the inner reaches of the continent.
The artwork for this specific promotional version was crafted by illustrator Jason Rainville. Rainville’s design sought to emphasize the connection between the merfolk and the primal magic of the jungle, capturing the champion in a moment of growth and engagement. Within the game’s competitive landscape, the card was designed to reward players for casting noncreature spells, reflecting a strategic archetype that emphasizes the synergy between spell-casting and creature growth.
