Where it came from
Deeproot Pilgrimage was released in 2023 as part of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan set, a return to the Mesoamerican-inspired plane of Ixalan within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The card depicts a ritualistic journey undertaken by the Merfolk of the River Heralds, reflecting the set's central themes of exploration, ancient subterranean civilizations, and the preservation of mystical natural forces. It was designed as an enchantment to provide players with a sustainable engine for token generation, specifically emphasizing the synergy between creature attacks and board presence.
The artwork for this specific promotional version was crafted to emphasize the vibrant, lush aesthetic associated with the Ixalan setting, utilizing deep greens and blues to evoke the humid, subterranean environment of the Caverns. Like other promo iterations in the set, the card features unique border treatments or foil finishes intended to appeal to collectors and competitive players alike. It was well-received upon release for its mechanical utility in tribal Merfolk decks, becoming a staple component for players looking to bolster their forces during combat.
