Where it came from
Deeproot Pilgrimage was released as part of the promotional set for The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, a Magic: The Gathering expansion set launched in late 2023. The card explores the subterranean world of Ixalan, focusing on the Merfolk civilization residing within the caverns. It was designed as an enchantment that rewards players for interacting with their creatures, specifically leaning into the synergy between Merfolk tribal identity and token generation.
The artwork for this specific promo variant was crafted to reflect the lush, underground bioluminescence of the set's environment. As a promo card, its aesthetic was intended to appeal to collectors who favor unique border treatments and alternate art styles. The design received positive attention within the community for its thematic resonance and its utility in tribal-focused gameplay formats.
