Deepwood Drummer

Deepwood Drummer was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was inspired by the plane of Mercadia, a mercantilist world defined by high-stakes trade, political manipulation, and a distinct aesthetic that departed from the high-fantasy tropes of previous sets. This creature was designed as a common-rarity utility card, serving to reinforce the set's mechanical focus on mana acceleration and creature-based resource management within the green color identity.

The card’s illustration was provided by artist Ron Spears, who contributed extensively to the game during this era. Spears utilized a distinct, grounded style to depict the drummer, emphasizing the character’s rugged connection to the dense, foreboding forests of the Mercadian Deepwood.
