Provenance

Where it came from

Defense Grid was first introduced in the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998, designed as a disruptive artifact to counter the prevalence of instant-speed spells in competitive play. By increasing the cost of spells cast during an opponent's turn, it forces a more deliberate, sorcery-speed pace that shifts the tactical advantage toward players who operate primarily on their own turn.

The Ninth Edition printing, released in 2005, features the iconic artwork by Mark Tedin. Tedin’s depiction of the grid captures a mechanical, imposing presence that fits the artifact's role as a board-stabilizing tool. As a core set inclusion, this version served to maintain the card's availability for newer players entering the game during the mid-2000s, solidifying its status as a staple for control and lock-down archetypes in various formats.
