Plague Beetle

Plague Beetle was originally printed in the Urza's Destiny expansion in 1999, designed as a common black creature that utilized the swampwalk ability to reward players for controlling specific land types. The card was brought back for the Ninth Edition core set in 2005, which served as a bridge for players to access classic mechanics within a modern frame. By the time of the Ninth Edition release, Wizards of the Coast was focused on refreshing the card pool to maintain mechanical consistency for the standard tournament environment.

The Ninth Edition illustration was provided by Tom Fleming, a versatile artist known for his contribution to the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic during the early-to-mid 2000s. Fleming sought to emphasize the grotesque, chitinous nature of the creature, utilizing a moody lighting scheme that aligned with the dark, pestilential themes associated with black-aligned cards of the era. The piece was well-received by fans of the game's creature-centric design, often noted for its effective depiction of an unsettling insectoid menace.
