Lore

Why it matters

As an uncommon card from the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set, this piece functions as a board-clearing tool that scales in lethality based on the number of creatures already lost to the graveyard. Its utility makes it a prized inclusion for decks that thrive on attrition, as it allows players to systematically weaken or eliminate an opponent's field presence.

Provenance

Where it came from

Defile was released in 2022 as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set for Magic: The Gathering. This release marked a significant collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop, integrating the grim darkness of the Warhammer 40,000 universe into the mechanics of Magic. The card was included in the Tyranid Swarm deck, reflecting the faction's parasitic and destructive nature through the card's ability to weaken creatures based on the number of Swamps a player controls.

The artwork for this particular iteration of the card was created by illustrator Antonio José Manzanedo. His design emphasizes the visceral, horror-laden aesthetic characteristic of the Warhammer setting, focusing on the encroaching corruption associated with the Tyranid Hive Mind. The card was well-received by fans of both franchises for its thematic cohesion and its utility in the Commander format, serving as a functional piece of flavor that bridges the two complex tabletop worlds.
