Where it came from
The Lord of Change card, appearing as number 24 in the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set released in 2022, represents a collaborative effort between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop. This set marked a significant expansion of the Magic: The Gathering 'Universes Beyond' initiative, designed to integrate the grimdark lore of the Warhammer 40,000 tabletop universe into the mechanics of Commander play. The card depicts a Greater Daemon of Tzeentch, the Chaos God of change and sorcery, serving as a powerful blue creature that emphasizes the card-advantage mechanics associated with its mythological archetype.
The artistic direction for this piece was intended to capture the erratic and ethereal nature of the Lord of Change, characterized by its avian features and mastery of arcane fire. By translating the visual language of Citadel miniatures into the two-dimensional frame of a Magic card, the illustrators sought to maintain consistency with the existing Warhammer aesthetic while ensuring the card remained legible within the distinct visual framework of a trading card game. Upon its release, the set was widely praised for its mechanical fidelity to the source material, with the Lord of Change becoming a staple for players utilizing blue-based control or graveyard-recursion strategies.
