Where it came from
The Lord of Change card, numbered 24, was released as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set for Magic: The Gathering in 2022. This crossover product was developed through a partnership between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop, designed to translate the complex tabletop wargaming aesthetics of the Warhammer 40,000 universe into the mechanics of a Commander-format trading card game deck.
The art features the Greater Daemon of Tzeentch, a creature iconic to the Warhammer lore for its shifting form and mastery of magic. The design process focused on reflecting the character's avian-like appearance and chaotic nature within the constraints of Magic's frame, aiming to satisfy both franchise loyalists and card players. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional addition to Grixis-colored spell-slinging strategies, noted for its ability to manipulate the game state through its unique cost-reduction and casting effects.
