Provenance

Where it came from

The Demon token was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set 'Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate.' This set was designed to bring the flavor and mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons into the card game, specifically focusing on the iconic city of Baldur's Gate. Tokens like this one were produced to represent temporary creatures created by various cards during gameplay, ensuring players had a physical indicator of the board state.

The artwork for this specific token was created by Greg Staples, a long-time illustrator for Magic: The Gathering. Staples employed a visceral, dark fantasy aesthetic intended to evoke the terrifying nature of a D&D demon. The illustration was received positively by players for its classic, menacing depiction of an Abyssal entity, fitting seamlessly into the high-fantasy visual identity established by the broader set.
