Where it came from
The Shapeshifter token, designated as number 28 in the Battle for Baldur's Gate token set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2022 to accompany the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion. This set was designed to integrate the flavor and mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons’ iconic Forgotten Realms setting into the Magic: The Gathering card game, providing players with the necessary game pieces to represent creatures created by spells such as Mirror Image or various changeling-related effects.
The token features artistic direction focused on the fluid, amorphous nature of a shapeshifter, designed to convey its ability to mimic other creatures on the battlefield. As a standard inclusion in expansion booster packs, it serves a functional role in gameplay, prioritizing clarity and thematic consistency with the Dungeons & Dragons aesthetic. The design was received by the community as a standard utility piece, appreciated for its thematic cohesion with the larger set's focus on party mechanics and iconic fantasy tropes.
