Where it came from
Demonic Consultation was originally released in the 1996 expansion Ice Age. The card represents a quintessential example of high-risk, high-reward design from early Magic: The Gathering, offering a powerful deck-thinning effect at the cost of potential self-exile. Over time, it transitioned from a casual curiosity into a staple of competitive play in formats like Legacy and Commander, where its ability to find key combo pieces for a single black mana remains potent.
This specific version, released as part of the Secret Lair Countdown Kit, features updated artistic direction intended to align with the modern, stylized aesthetic of the Secret Lair series. The artwork aims to capture the sinister, esoteric nature of the card's theme, utilizing a sharp, evocative visual language that distinguishes it from the original illustrations. It was curated for a limited-release box set that gathered iconic black-bordered cards, serving as both a functional tool for players and a collectible piece for those who appreciate the evolution of the game's visual identity.
