Where it came from
Demonic Consultation was originally released in the 1996 Ice Age expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed by the internal Wizards of the Coast team, the card was intended as a high-risk, high-reward black instant, allowing players to search their library for any card at the cost of exiling the top portion of their deck. The card's design reflects the brutal, unforgiving nature of early black-mana philosophy, where power is gained only through significant sacrifice.
This specific iteration from Mystery Booster 2 features the 'retro' frame treatment, which recreates the aesthetic of the game's early years. Mystery Booster 2 was designed as a curated play experience that highlights iconic, powerful, or unusual cards from the game's history. By reissuing this card in its classic visual style, the set aims to evoke nostalgia for long-time players while providing modern access to a card that remains a staple in high-level competitive formats due to its extreme efficiency.
