Where it came from
Demonic Consultation was originally released in the 1996 Ice Age expansion, designed as a high-risk, high-reward tutor effect that allowed players to exile the top cards of their library to search for a specific card. The card became a staple in competitive formats like Legacy and Commander due to its extreme efficiency, though its volatile nature has often made it a subject of intrigue among long-term players.
The Secret Lair Countdown version, numbered 31, features stylized, dark-fantasy aesthetic choices consistent with the sub-line's goal of reimagining iconic spells through a more experimental artistic lens. This iteration was curated as part of a limited-run collection, emphasizing the card's sinister thematic roots while providing a modern visual treatment that differentiates it from the original utilitarian illustration.
