Somberwald Vigilante was released in the 2012 Magic: The Gathering expansion set, Avacyn Restored. This set was designed to reflect the transformation of the plane of Innistrad following the return of the archangel Avacyn, shifting the thematic focus from gothic horror and despair to a brief, hopeful period of angelic restoration. Within this narrative, the card represents the desperate human inhabitants of the forest, specifically the Somberwald, who took up arms to protect their dwindling communities from the lingering supernatural threats plaguing the region.
