Where it came from
Dermotaxi was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed specifically for the Modern format, drawing heavily from deep-cut mechanics and nostalgic references throughout the game's history. The card itself features a creative, grotesque aesthetic that mirrors the body-horror themes often associated with the Phyrexians, the antagonists whose influence permeates the set's lore.
The card was illustrated by Titus Lunter, whose digital painting style emphasizes the surreal, bio-mechanical nature of the 'taxi'—a vehicle crafted from organic matter. As a rare, the card is recognized for its unique 'Imprint' mechanic, which allows players to exile creature cards from graveyards to transform the vehicle into a copy of those creatures. It was received by the community as a flavorful utility card, particularly appreciated by players who enjoy graveyard-based strategies and unique deck-building challenges.
