Where it came from
Released in June 2005 as part of the Saviors of Kamigawa set, Descendant of Soramaro represents the intersection of Japanese-inspired mythology and the core mechanics of Magic: The Gathering. As a creature card, it was designed to reward players for maintaining a large hand size, a central theme for the blue color identity within this block. It serves as a narrative continuation of the legendary spirit Soramaro, First to Dream, echoing the ethereal and arcane aesthetic that defined the Kamigawa plane.
The artwork was rendered by the fantasy illustrator Ittoku, who contributed significantly to the distinct visual identity of the Kamigawa block. The design focuses on the flowing, spectral qualities of spirits, utilizing a palette and style that emphasizes the mystical nature of the setting. Upon its release, the card was noted for its utility in draft and casual play formats, though it remained a niche choice compared to more aggressive cards in the competitive landscape.
