Where it came from
Dermotaxi was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a direct-to-modern set, Modern Horizons 2 was designed to introduce cards specifically tuned for the Modern competitive format, bypassing the standard rotation of the core sets. The card reflects the set's thematic commitment to nostalgia and mechanical innovation, utilizing the 'imprint' mechanic to exile creature cards from graveyards and transform into a copy of them, serving as a tactical tool for graveyard-focused archetypes.
The art was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov, a veteran contributor to the game known for his polished, high-fantasy style. In this piece, Velinov depicts the visceral, mechanical nature of the vehicle, emphasizing its role as a parasitic construct that repurposes the biological remains of other creatures. The card was received by the player community as an intriguing piece of utility equipment, noted for its niche application in sideboard strategies and its evocative, slightly grotesque contribution to the set's overall aesthetic identity.
