Where it came from
Descend upon the Sinful was released as part of the Shadows over Innistrad expansion in 2016, a set that revisited the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad. The card was designed as a powerful board wipe for the White color identity, functioning within the set's narrative of encroaching eldritch corruption and the struggle against otherworldly horrors. Mechanically, it emphasizes the Delirium keyword, rewarding players for maintaining a diverse graveyard, which reflects the theme of madness and decay central to the block.
The illustration for this specific promo version was created by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist within the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem. Villeneuve utilized a dramatic, sweeping style to capture the scale of the cataclysmic event described by the card's effect. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its tactical utility in control decks, and the artwork was praised for its dark, atmospheric aesthetic that effectively distilled the ominous tone of the Innistrad setting.
