Where it came from
Released in April 2016 as part of the Shadows over Innistrad expansion for Magic: The Gathering, Descend upon the Sinful reflects the set’s core thematic exploration of Gothic horror and the encroaching influence of the Eldrazi titans on the plane of Innistrad. The card was designed as a high-mana value board wipe, featuring the 'delirium' mechanic—a signature element of the set that rewards players for having diverse card types in their graveyard, representing the psychological unraveling of the plane’s inhabitants.
The illustration was crafted by artist Dan Dos Santos, who sought to capture the overwhelming, surreal scale of Avacyn’s divine retribution. His design emphasizes a sense of impending cosmic judgment, utilizing dramatic lighting and scale to highlight the transition of Innistrad from a world of localized monster hunting to one of cataclysmic supernatural struggle. The card was well-received by players for its impact in control-oriented strategies, serving as a pivotal tool for stabilizing games against aggressive decks.
