Where it came from
Descend upon the Sinful was released in 2020 as part of the Commander 2020 expansion, a collection of preconstructed decks themed around the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths set. The card is a functional reprint of a board wipe originally introduced in Shadows over Innistrad, designed to provide players with a powerful removal tool that doubles as a board presence by creating a 4/4 flying token upon resolution.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Dan Dos Santos, who captured the chaotic, divine imagery central to the card's effect. The art style leans into the dramatic, high-fantasy aesthetic favored by Wizards of the Coast for their core magic sets, emphasizing the theme of retribution. It has been well-received by players for its efficiency in multiplayer formats, where clearing the battlefield while gaining a persistent threat is considered a high-value play.
