Where it came from
Pure Intentions was released in 2005 as part of the Saviors of Kamigawa expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the concluding chapter of the Kamigawa block, a high-fantasy world heavily inspired by Japanese mythology and folklore. Designed during a period when the game was exploring unique mechanics related to hand size and graveyard interaction, the card was intended to provide a niche utility for players focusing on discarding cards for strategic advantage.
The card features artwork by the illustrator Matt Cavotta, a prolific artist for the game during this era. His design utilizes the distinct visual language established for the Kamigawa setting, emphasizing ethereal spirits and the serene, spiritual aesthetic of the plane. While the card is often viewed by players as a specialized tool rather than a centerpiece of competitive play, it remains a notable example of the artistic consistency and thematic cohesion that defined the block's development.
