Where it came from
Despise was originally introduced in the New Phyrexia set in 2011, later appearing in the Khans of Tarkir expansion as part of a strategic reprint. It serves as a black-aligned sorcery that allows a player to look at an opponent's hand and force them to discard a creature or planeswalker card. Its inclusion in Khans of Tarkir was designed to provide players with a targeted discard effect amidst the set's focus on multicolored wedge factions and graveyard-heavy mechanics.
The artwork for the Khans of Tarkir version was illustrated by Clint Cearley, who sought to capture the visceral and dark essence of the discard spell. The visual direction emphasizes the psychological weight of the effect, depicting a figure stripped of their defenses. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional tool for competitive play, valued for its ability to dismantle an opponent's game plan in the early turns of a match.
