Provenance

Where it came from

Despise was originally released in the New Phyrexia expansion in 2011, featuring artwork by Eric Deschamps. As a black sorcery that allows a player to look at an opponent's hand and discard a creature or planeswalker, it became a staple tool for disruption in competitive Magic: The Gathering decks of that era.

The Friday Night Magic promo version, released in 2012 as collector number 2, features distinctive alternate artwork by Kev Walker. These promotional cards were distributed as prizes for participation in local game store events, serving as a reward for players who engaged in the community-focused Friday Night Magic program. Walker's design emphasizes the dark, sinister nature of the card, consistent with the aesthetic of the Phyrexian-themed block it originated from.
