Despoil

Despoil was released in 1999 as part of the Prophecy expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a common black sorcery, it was designed to fit within the set's thematic focus on resource management and the sacrifice of lands to fuel powerful spells. The expansion was developed during a period when Wizards of the Coast was exploring mechanics that forced players to make difficult trade-offs regarding their board state, placing significant emphasis on the control of mana sources.

The artwork for the card was provided by Scott M. Fischer, a prolific illustrator whose style frequently defined the darker, visceral aesthetics of late 1990s fantasy gaming. Fischer employed his characteristic approach of high-contrast lighting and dramatic, shadowed figures to capture the destructive essence of the spell. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, if situational, utility spell, primarily utilized in limited formats where manipulating an opponent's land count could shift the momentum of a game.
