Where it came from
The Devil token from the War of the Spark expansion was released by Wizards of the Coast in May 2019. It was designed to support cards within the set that generated temporary creature tokens, specifically those appearing alongside the set's signature Planeswalker-focused mechanics. In the game's lore, these tokens represent the chaotic, explosive manifestations summoned by various red-aligned spells on the plane of Ravnica.
The artwork was commissioned by Wizards of the Coast to maintain the high-fantasy aesthetic consistent with the rest of the set. Illustrators for the token series were tasked with creating a cohesive visual style that reflected the perilous nature of the Ravnican conflict. Upon release, the token was widely distributed in booster packs and became a functional staple for players utilizing specific red-aligned strategies in both constructed and limited formats.
