Provenance

Where it came from

The Devil token from the Shadows over Innistrad set was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2016 as part of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed to support the set's mechanical themes, specifically those involving sacrifice and temporary creature creation, which were central to the gothic horror narrative of the plane of Innistrad.

The artwork for this token was created by Deruchenko Alexander. The illustration emphasizes the chaotic and pyromaniacal nature of the devils in the Innistrad setting, utilizing sharp, angular features and vibrant colors to contrast with the darker, more muted tones of the standard set cards. It is widely regarded as a visually distinct and iconic representation of the creature type within the game's modern era.
