Provenance

Where it came from

The Wizard token was released as part of the War of the Spark expansion for Magic: The Gathering, which debuted in 2019. This set was unique in its narrative focus on the culmination of the Nicol Bolas story arc, featuring an unprecedented number of planeswalker cards. Tokens are peripheral game pieces produced to represent creatures created by the spells and abilities of main-deck cards, serving as essential utility items for players during the game's high-stakes sessions.

The artwork for this specific token was illustrated by Johannes Voss. His design approach for this series leaned into the magical, ethereal aesthetic central to the Wizard archetype, utilizing vibrant colors and distinct iconography to ensure the card remained instantly identifiable on a cluttered playmat. The token was widely well-received by the community for its clean, expressive style and its functional necessity in the popular Limited and Commander formats.
