Where it came from
Released in October 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion, this Swamp card reflects the set's thematic focus on the plane of Mercadia. Unlike the core sets that preceded it, Mercadian Masques introduced a distinct aesthetic departure, characterized by a more grounded, slightly gritty fantasy style that moved away from the high-magic visuals of earlier iterations to emphasize the mercantilist and urban nature of the plane's capital city.
The card features artwork by Rob Alexander, a staple illustrator for the game during this era known for his atmospheric landscapes. Alexander aimed to evoke a sense of desolate, industrial dampness that felt unique to the setting of Mercadia, utilizing a color palette that emphasizes murky browns and deep greens rather than the traditional dark purple-black tones often associated with the swamp landscape type.
