Diabolic Edict was first introduced in the 1997 Tempest expansion, designed as a black instant that forced an opponent to sacrifice a creature. The version featured here hails from the 1999 World Championship Decks, a product line created by Wizards of the Coast to replicate the exact card lists used by the top eight finishers at the World Championship. This specific card represents the deck piloted by Jakub Slemr, the 1997 World Champion, serving as a snapshot of the competitive metagame that defined professional play in that era.

The card’s original illustration by Kev Walker is renowned for its dark, evocative depiction of ritualistic sacrifice, which set the tone for black-aligned spells during the late 1990s.
