Where it came from
Dimir Informant was released in 2018 as part of the Guilds of Ravnica expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set returned players to the plane of Ravnica, a cityscape controlled by ten distinct guilds, each with a unique color identity and philosophy. As a member of the House Dimir, which functions as the secret police and information brokers of the city, the card was designed to represent the guild's signature mechanic, Surveil, which allows a player to look at the top cards of their library and decide what to keep or discard to the graveyard.
The card illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who utilized a moody, atmospheric aesthetic to reflect the clandestine nature of the Dimir. The visual focus is on a hooded figure submerged in the shadows of Ravnica's architecture, capturing the guild's penchant for espionage and hidden knowledge. Upon release, the card became a staple in limited formats, valued for its ability to filter card selection while providing a sturdy body on the battlefield, embodying the calculated precision that the guild represents.
